It is also a bridging point, where children display their creations and get to bring them home from school, sharing their life away from home. We fully understand that art is an important way for children to externalize and interpret visuals. It also gives Newton teachers a unique way to assess fundamental skills such as perception, cognitive development, fine motor skills, spacial awareness, colors and creativity.
Physically, students get to feel the finger-paint and the sensation of smearing it on paper, they get to train finger muscles when holding pens or using scissors where cardboard gives resistance and they feel success in their accomplishment and ownership of their creation. Guiding principles: Teaching expressive art techniques, encouraging imaginative creations. Children use art resources; paper, cardboard, recyclables and tools; brushes, pens, scissors to strengthen the creative mind and body.
Background: Art and expressing thoughts and dreams help a child develop mentally, socially and emotionally. Creating art improves children's ability to analyze and problem solve. By manipulating a paintbrush, they improve fine motor skills. By counting pieces and colors, they learn the basics of math. When children experiment with materials and mix colors they touch on concepts of science. Most importantly, students feel good when they are creating and art helps develop self-confidence.
