Newton’s children had a thematic harvest activity today. They picked vegetables from the Newton gardens in order to develop the children'svision, increase their knowledge and become more intimate with nature. We letthe kids experience the result of their labors and the happiness of their achievement.
This activity explored the transformation between the times of sowing in spring to the time of harvesting in autumn. Our harvest included various colorful vegetables, ready and ripe, sending a sweet smell into the air. The children are transported to a farmland, with the smell of fragrant vegetables. They are very excited!
Before picking the vegetables, the teachers allowed the children to observe the vegetables they’d been growing telling them to pay close attention to the different shapes, colors, sizes, and types of vegetables. They explained the proper way of picking them and talked about the parts of the vegetables we can eat as well as whether they are fruits, vegetables or seeds. Cucumbers, string beans and tomatoes being fruits, and corn being a seed. It is important that children know some scientific knowledge of vegetables.
