Mid-Autumn Festival is a day of reunion, a full round moon, and round mooncakes; Mid-Autumn Festival is a happy day with beautiful greetings and full of friendship.Tao Xingzhi, an educator, pointed out that life is education, which is to stretch everything from school and then extend it to the nature and society. Therefore, on the 20th and 21st of September, the New Newton Kindergarten has designed an activity called the "reunion of our Newton family” to make moon cakes in accordance to difficulty levels of the children from different grades.
The kneaded mooncakes, all different kinds of stuffing and the embossed molds were prepared and cleaned in advance. The careful preparations of the chef, sous chef and assistants in the kitchen are indispensable. Making mooncakes requires several different steps: making the dough, kneading, rubbing, packing, pressing, baking, cooling and drying out oil for 2-3 days. So there are many processes and just by our own small community we cannot complete it all on our own. Guess what, we have a good plan.
The teachers have told us that the group work is great. So we thought of working together to complete the task of making mooncakes. The younger children from the small classes helped the elder children from the big classes prepare the bean paste stuffing. They rubbed the bean paste stuffing together to made a ball. They prepared the stuffing one day in advance and put it in the fridge for cooling. Then the next day, the older children wrapped the mooncake dough around the bean paste balls, and this saved them a lot of time.
It was the turn of the elder children to show their skills, with the younger children having already rolled the balls. The teacher said press the small ball of dough flat, put it in your palm and press it down flat again, now put a mooncake filling in it. One hand gently pushes the cake, the other hand gently pushes the dough, so that the cake dough slowly unfolds until the cake is completely wrapped. Put the mooncake into the mold and gently flatten it. Push the mold down slowly and the mooncake will be ready.
Then the Chef puts the mooncakes in the oven and the children can take them home from school. When the mooncakes will have dried out all their oil in 2-3 days it will be Mid-Autumn Festival. This is a piece of our own mind, a full mooncake for my dear family, I wish them happiness and well-being! During the Mid-Autumn Festival, families reunite, enjoy the full moon, eat sweet cake and enjoy each other’s company.
At this event, the New Newton Kindergarten has effectively utilized the Mid-Autumn Festival as a traditional festival in life. It not only enables children to understand the traditional culture of the Mid-Autumn Festival, but also guides them to experience the various processes of making mooncakes by themselves. At the same time, they have mastered the skills of pressing, rubbing and molding mooncakes and experienced the feeling of mutual help among their peers. The so-called "life is education", in our life, in our nature, education is everywhere.
